Define this: A Gentleman

I'm curious to see what this means to you. I've been trying to define this, looked it up on the web and found a few things that I would use to describe a gentleman, but I'm still looking for more. PLEASE comment with your definitions or examples.

A gentleman has really great manners, and always treats women and others with respect.

I agree- good manners, polite, can even say, sir and mam- Says thank you and acts gracious in company -

Do you remember my friend Matthew Hamilton - you called him Matty Ham- from VA- he is a gentleman- what he does in his personal life is sometimes crazy but he is such a gentleman!

A man who will always put others before himself is a gentleman. That can mean the typical things like opening the door for someone, letting someone else sit in his seat, etc. Or more subtle things like always listening, never interrupting. Looking for small ways to help others, and make their lives easier. Helping without having to be asked, etc.

The boys like to open the door to the apartment complex and usher me in with one arm and saying 'Ladies first'. I always tell them they are gentlemen when they do that. I think they treat women especially their mom or wife as they are the most special person in the world.

good manners and a pleasant countenance (which good manners always help). just plain politeness and a guy that always is courteous.

Well, let's break the word down into it's original pieces: gentle and man. I believe that a gentleman then must be both those things: he must be gentle; and must be a man. okay, that definition is pretty lame...

On a more serious note...every single time I see an act of chivalry throughout the day I make sure to mention to the particular individual that he is such a gentleman, (positive reinforcement!) :) So define chivalry and you have defined a gentleman.

PS-it was so great to see you in the lab the other day!

I laughed at "a myth". Funny. I just think a gentlemen is a man that makes you feel safe and secure. Also, one that you can feel the spirit when you're with him...I never thought I'd say that until I moved here and I had to sit by guys at football games and they are just so gross, have horrible mouths, etc. Wherever a gentlemen is, the spirit follows. P.S. I love seeing you all the time!! I just wish we weren't working so we could talk!
